Council of Almoners
The Council of Almoners (which is the corporate Trustee of Christ's Hospital Foundation) currently consists of 12 Almoners, seven being Old Blues (former pupils). They volunteer their time and expertise to run the charity, under the rules of a Scheme of Administration granted by the Charity Commission. This sets out the legal framework for operating Christ's Hospital. (The Council of Almoners of Christ's Hospital is a company limited by guarantee. Registered in England and Wales as Company No. 5498489.)
Sir Garry Johnson (Old Blue) is the Treasurer and Chairman of the Council of Almoners. He worked in the City for a year before joining the Army. He served until 1994 in a variety of roles, from being an infantry officer on active service to Commander-in-Chief of NATO Forces in Northern Europe. Since 1995, he has been extensively involved in conflict prevention. He also served from 1995 to 1999 as Chairman of the National Council for Training and Enterprise in the United Kingdom. He has served on various trustee bodies in the fields of culture, healthcare, and education and has been Treasurer of Christ's Hospital since September 2007.
Bill Richards (Old Blue) is the Deputy Chairman of Council. He is Head of Risk and Compliance in a leading firm of London solicitors.
James Arnell (Old Blue) is a partner in a private equity firm in the City. He Chairs the Assets and Liabilities Committee.
Richard Carden is a retired Managing Director, having worked in banking for many years. He is currently Chairman of the Board of School Governors.
Jeffrey Evans is Managing Director, Gas, and a member of the Executive committee of Clarksons, commonly regarded as the world's largest shipbroker and shipping services provider. He is a member of the Baltic Exchange, and President of the City of London Sea Cadets. A member of the Court of Aldermen, he also sits as a Magistrate on the City of London Bench and is a Governor of the City of London Academy, Islington. He is a member of the Foundation Audit Committee.
Peter Farnfield (Old Blue) is the Property Investment Manager for a property company. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and has spent most of his professional career in property investment, managing a multi-million pound Property Unit Trust for over 12 years. He chairs the Property Investment sub-Committee and is a member of the Assets and Liabilities Committee.
Dominic Fry (Old Blue) is Director of Communications for a large retailer and has previously held posts as Communications Director for several household name companies.
Michael Mainelli worked formerly as a research scientist and accountancy firm partner and is the co-founder of a leading commercial think-tank which aims to promote societal advance through better finance and technology. Michael has won several business awards including UK IT Director of the Year and has served on the board of Europe's largest R&D organisation.
Catherine McGuinness was for several years a partner in a City law firm, and now works as a consultant in the financial sector. She is a member of the Court of Common Council of the City of London and a member of several City of London committees.
Delva Patman is a Chartered Surveyor. She worked in private practice for some years before establishing her own practice in 1980. She chairs the Estate sub-committee and is a member of the Assets & Liabilities Committee.
Claire Tattersall (Old Blue) is a self employed HR and Recruitment consultant.
Alan Yarrow is the Executive Chairman of a leading banking institution. He is a member of the Court of Aldermen of the City of London. He is a member of the Assets and Liabilities Committee.
In addition to Almoners, Council is also served by 20 further volunteers who provide their professional expertise to the Committees that Council has set up to drive forward its work.
