Work on the new catering facility for Christ’s Hospital continues
The current kitchen at CH was constructed as a temporary measure nearly a decade ago and is at the end of its working life. Over the last two years, careful consideration has been given to a suitable long-term solution. The CH team has worked closely with the local planning authority and Historic England and planning consent was granted in September 2017. The project was put out to tender and subsequently approved by the Council of Christ’s Hospital and a contract was awarded to ARJ Construction Ltd.
The Food and Nutrition department will also be housed in the new facility providing a permanent, well equipped and modern environment for the department. Awareness of good nutrition plays an increasingly important role in education and therefore this is will be a fantastic provision for the pupils.
The significant investment in the planned maintenance programme over the last ten years means that projected expenditure on site maintenance, including the boarding houses, is lower than previously forecast. This increases our capacity to invest in this new catering facility that will meet the School’s needs and be sustainable for the next 50 years and beyond.
We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation as work continues on this project. The temporary changes in place in dining hall due to the servery being out of action are working well. We continue to work with the contractors to minimise disruption as we move forward with the project into the construction phase as much as possible - the project is due to be complete for the new catering facility to open at the beginning of the Michaelmas term in 2019.
During May the the demolition of the existing catering facility took place, with some old material reclaimed where possible for the construction process. June will see the forming of the piling mat and the pile caps and ground beams will also be installed.
