Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarships and Bursaries
Christ’s Hospital is proud to recognise and nurture bright, ambitious and talented students through our scholarship programme, available at 11+, 13+ and Sixth Form entry.
Scholarships celebrate excellence and are awarded for academic achievement as well as outstanding ability in music, art, drama or sport. They may be given to new entrants or to existing students as they progress through the school.
Unlike bursaries, which provide means-tested financial support to families who need help with fees, scholarships are a mark of distinction. They honour a student’s extraordinary potential and reward their achievements. A bursary makes a Christ’s Hospital education possible, while a scholarship recognises a student’s contribution and promise. Both may be held at the same time.
In addition to subject-specific awards, the Head may also grant a discretionary scholarship for all-round academic strength and broader curricular achievement or potential. This award can be honorary or carry a financial element and is open to both boarding and day students.
Scholars at Christ’s Hospital bring something unique to our community. They set standards, inspire others and benefit from opportunities that allow their talents to flourish in a vibrant and supportive environment.
Scholarships may carry a financial award of up to 20% of fees, or be honorary, reflecting the honour and responsibility of being a Christ’s Hospital scholar.
Scholarship awards are highly competitive. Assessments are designed not only to identify current ability but also the promise of future contribution to the life of the school.
If you would like to be considered for a Christ’s Hospital scholarship, simply tick the scholarship option when completing your application form and we will send you the relevant information.
Further information is available in our Scholarship Booklet.

What is the difference between a bursary and a scholarship?
A bursary is means-tested financial support, provided to families who would not otherwise be able to afford some or all of the school fees. Scholarships, by contrast, recognise outstanding achievement and talent in areas such as academic work, music, sport, art, or drama.
Scholarships may offer a reduction of up to 20% of the assessed fee level, and students can be awarded both a bursary and a scholarship at the same time.
Bursaries ensure that a Christ’s Hospital education is accessible to families from a wide range of backgrounds, while scholarships celebrate and reward the exceptional abilities of a small number of students.
What is a Christ’s Hospital bursary and how do I get a one?
Anyone can apply for a Christ’s Hospital bursary.
Christ’s Hospital is committed to providing an outstanding education to bright and ambitious students from a wide range of social and financial backgrounds. Means-tested financial support, known as a bursary, may cover up to 100% of the school fees.
If you would like to be considered for a bursary, simply tick the bursary option when completing your application for a place. We will then provide you with the relevant forms to outline your circumstances. As you progress through the admissions process, the information requested becomes more detailed and you will be asked to provide evidence such as bank statements.
