DG (Year 12) student Hetty has been awarded a prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, which she applied for with the help of her DT teacher.

She designed a project looking into the mechanics of a can crusher and creating 3D CAD drawings, which she was then asked about by a panel of engineering experts during an interview. As a result, she is now an Arkwright Engineering scholar and is sponsored by IMI Truflo Marine, a specialist designer and manufacturer of high integrity valves, actuators and pressure reducing stations for naval marine and nuclear stations.

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships is the most esteemed scholarship scheme of its type in the UK and is designed to identify, inspire and nurture future brilliant engineers. Scholarships are awarded, through a rigorous selection process, to high-calibre students who apply when in Year 11. The scholarships support students through their A levels and encourage students to pursue engineering, computing or technical design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to pursue careers in the field.

Scholars receive a financial award to spend on STEM related activities and are paired with a mentor – a professional engineer who can provide advice and guidance about future study and career development, and even technical advice to help with projects.

Congratulations Hetty – a brilliant future in engineering surely beckons.
