On 5 December, we hosted our annual Tony Ray-Jones Photography Competition, judged this year by fashion journalist, author and blogger Alyson Walsh. The day concluded with an engaging Q&A, where Alyson shared insights from her career – from working as a fashion journalist and editor in the 1990s to founding her acclaimed blog, That’s Not My Age, which celebrates style in midlife and beyond.
This year, the competition theme was Fashion, chosen for its popularity and accessibility. As ever, Christ’s Hospital students approached the brief with individuality, creativity and their own distinctive vision.

The competition is named in honour of Tony Ray-Jones, Old Blue, who died at the young age of 31. In his brief but prolific career, Tony captured the essence of British life through documentary photography, reflecting humour, irony, compassion, and nostalgia. His work left a lasting influence on generations of photographers.
The Head, Mr Judd, generously donated this year’s camera for the winning entry, adding an extra incentive for budding photographers to showcase their talent.
Alyson Walsh praised the students for their imaginative interpretations of the theme, and the winners were announced as follows:
- Junior Winner: Richard (Third Form/Year 8) – below left
- Intermediate Winner: Hillary (GE/11) – below middle
- Senior Winner: Paloma (GR/Year 13) – second row down, left
- Best in Show: Juntong (DG/Year 12) – below right
A heartfelt thanks to Alyson Walsh for her time, expertise and fashion-forward insights, which made the day truly inspiring for all participants.
