Dennis Silk CBE – PrepA, MaA 42-50
It was with great sadness that we received the news of the death of Dennis Silk CBE. With many members of his family with him, Dennis passed away on 19th June 2019.
Dennis arrived at CH in 1942 at age 11. The next eight years saw many achievements across all areas, with Dennis’ accomplishments in cricket, rugby and fives being particular highlights. He was an outstanding all round sportsman. Dennis was appointed Senior Grecian.
At Cambridge, where he read History, Dennis continued to excel in sport. Playing cricket for Cambridge was followed by outstanding spells with Somerset and the MCC, including as Captain of the latter. Dennis served as President of the MCC (1992-1994) and Chairman of the TCCB (1994-1996).
Dennis’ illustrious teaching career at Marlborough and later as Warden at Radley continued until his retirement 1991. He established a new bursary programme at Radley that has to date enabled 31 boys to attend the school.
Dennis’ commitment to Christ’s Hospital saw him becoming a member of the Court of Governors, a member of the Amicable Foundation, a member of the BSB and a central figure in the Bath and West Old Blues group. In 2012 Dennis was awarded an Old Blue Special Recognition Award for “Excellence in Sport” and “Achievement in Chosen Career”.
His has been a glittering career and a full life; one of which his old school is immensely proud.
