Dyson Workshop Inspires Engineering Enthusiasm

Three engineers from the James Dyson Foundation visited Christ’s Hospital on 17 September to introduce our students to the exciting world of engineering with two separate workshops.

There were two workshops running simultaneously – a robotics workshop for our DG (Year 12) students and a prototype workshop for our UF (Year 10) students.

The robotics workshop started with a talk about Dyson and how they develop a product. This was followed by a hands-on session, during which students were challenged to use their engineering, electronic and problem-solving skills to program a robot with the ability to navigate through a room and avoid obstacles along the way – much like the Dyson’s own robot vacuum.

The Prototype Workshop focused on the problem of air pollution and how practical and creative skills in engineering and design play crucial roles in finding solutions. An introductory talk was followed by a hands-on prototyping session and students were encouraged to discuss why air pollution matters to them, identify its causes, and prototype their solutions using cardboard, Dyson machine parts and tape. The students got creative in bringing their air pollution solutions to life and presenting them to their peers.

The James Dyson Foundation is Dyson’s charitable arm and aims to inspire young people to pursue a career in engineering through hands-on learning and experimentation. Their workshops are designed to encourage students to think like Dyson engineers, while exploring solutions to real-world problems and igniting a passion for engineering.
