Speech Day 2019

Speech Day is a long-standing tradition at Christ’s Hospital and has been held in the Summer term since 1871; this year’s Speech Day was held on Saturday 25 May and the School welcomed the Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Peter Estlin and the Sheriffs of the City of London.

Over 700 parents, pupils and supporters first attended a special Chapel service and then emerged in to the Quadrangle, in mercifully pleasant weather conditions. Junior pupils Rebecca and Paul bravely stepped out to present a posy of flowers to the Deputy Head, Marlene Fleming, in her final term at the School. This was followed by the March Past – an annual tradition when the drum majors leading the Band salute the Lord Mayor. The Band’s performance was excellent, as usual, and the pupils who followed marched proudly and proficiently with their ‘eyes right’.

At the Prize Giving ceremony that followed, senior pupils were presented with awards and prizes recognising academic achievement, leadership, international relations and outward bound activities. As is tradition, the Senior Grecian (Head Pupil) gave an oration to which the Lord Mayor responded with his own speech. This is always a highlight of the ceremony, this year’s oration by Angelle Roberts being no exception.

This wonderful occasion finished with an informal buffet lunch and the opportunity for visitors to see the Grecians’ Art Exhibition.
