Physical Education

Students in years 7 & 8 (2nd and 3rd form) have a double period (70mins) of Physical Education every week. During the year a wide range of activities are taught, to include Invasion Games (e.g. basketball), Net/Wall Games (e.g. tennis), Striking Games (e.g. cricket), Gymnastics, Swimming, Athletics and Health Related Fitness.

Students in years 9-11 (LE-GE) have the option to study GCSE Physical Education. The course is 60% practical and 40% theory and suits all students who have an interest in physical activity, coaching and officiating. If you enjoy working with others and have a positive approach towards your learning then PE is definitely an option.

Sports Science at Christ’s Hospital

The Sports Science department is pleased to offer a challenging programme of study designed to meet the needs of students who require a range of subjects that provide a high quality, rigorous academic framework. The key to our approach is innovation; we offer a leading course which is internationally recognised. The A Level is split in to Theory and Practical modules at both AS & A2.

AS/A-level GCE Physical Education (AQA)

This course takes a multi-disciplinary approach, encouraging the development of different methods of enquiry with the focal point being the performer and the performance. It allows students to appreciate the physiological, psychological and sociological issues that underpin both mass participation and elite athlete development. The course is based on the interaction between the theory and practice of Physical Education. It provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to develop their understanding of the multi-faceted world of sport as both an academic discipline and a global economic industry, and in this respect can provide a natural link to scientific and humanities courses.

Both of these courses aim to:

  • Provide opportunities for scientific study and creativity within a global context that will stimulate and challenge students.
  • Provide a body of knowledge, methods and techniques that characterise science and technology
  • Enable students to apply and use a body of knowledge, methods and techniques that characterise science and technology.
  • Develop an ability to analyse, evaluate and synthesize scientific information.
  • Engender an awareness of the need for and the value of, effective collaboration and communication during scientific activities.
  • Develop experimental and investigative scientific skills.
  • Develop and apply the students’ information and communication technology skills in the study of science.
  • Raise awareness of the moral, ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of using science and technology.
  • Develop an appreciation of the possibilities and limitations associated with science and scientists.
  • Encourage an understanding of the relationships between scientific disciplines and the overarching nature of the scientific method.
