On 13 November, Grecian (Year 13) members of the Medical Society enjoyed an inspiring and informative visit to the Royal National ENT and UCLH Eastman Dental Hospital, part of the University College Hospital NHS Trust. The day offered students a valuable insight into a wide range of clinical career pathways, including dentistry, dental hygiene, dental therapy, dental nursing and dental technology.
During the visit, students took part in several precision and hand–eye coordination activities, such as practising how to fill a model tooth. They then experienced Simodont, a virtual-reality dental simulator that replicates the feel of a dentist’s drill and allows users to test and refine their manual dexterity.
The programme concluded with a fascinating tour of the histology laboratory. Here, students traced the journey of a specimen from the moment it arrives in the lab through to processing, mounting and staining, ready for examination by a pathologist.
It was an engaging and highly motivating day for all involved. Christ’s Hospital extends its sincere thanks to Dr Oluyori Adegun for hosting the visit and sharing his expertise.
