Colonel Peter Roberts MBE was born in Bristol on 10th April 1954 to Pam and Gordon Roberts. One of six children, he has always been surrounded by his loving siblings, Bob, Dave, Nicola, James and John. Gordon being in the Royal Navy, the family moved regularly and enjoyed overseas postings such as Mombasa and Bangkok.
Peter attended Christ’s Hospital between 1965 and 1973 where he was a drummer in the renowned Christ’s Hospital Band. He went on to join the British army, completing his officer training at Sandhurst in 1975. He met Aileen whilst on a tour in Germany and they married on 1st April 1978 in a small church at the foot of Ben Nevis. Several guests nearly did not attend fearing that the invitation was an elaborate April fool!
He trained as a helicopter pilot and commanded the first Army Lynx Flight in 1979 during which time he was also awarded a Queen’s Commendation for work in Northern Ireland. He completed deployments flying microlights in Sudan and Chad. Peter and Aileen had three children, Sarah, Matthew and Katherine. The family completed postings in Brunei and several in Hong Kong. Following a further tour in Northern Ireland in 1996, Peter was promoted to Lt Colonel and awarded an MBE. He was promoted to full Colonel in 2001.
He served as Defence Attaché in Bangkok between 2003 and 2005 and played a critical role in the British Embassy’s response to the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004. He completed his decorated military career in Kosovo, working closely with the UN. He was recognised by colleagues to be a highly accomplished, reliable, and diligent officer with a lightness of touch and a deft sense of humour. Peter retired in 2009. In retirement, he bought and ran a caravan park on the Kent Coast and spent time travelling mainly in South East Asia. He became a Grandfather in November 2016 and now has four Grandchildren, Sebastian, Ottilie, Lizzie and Freya, who he loved dearly.
He passed away on 18th June 2026.
