Old Blues Cricket Club Update and News

from Alan Nichols (Maine A 2002-2009) & Alex Satterfield (Maine A 2003-2010)

This year we have planned and booked in a number of games already for which all Old Blues are welcome to participate in. In fact, we are actively recruiting new players! We are looking forward to a great season and what we hope, will be the ‘kick start’ of regular Old Blues cricket once again. The plan is to host some informal nets followed by 4 games including our most prestigious fixture against the school XI.

New for this season we have also organised a UK summer tour to Bruton, Somerset for an Old Blues Cricket Festival. Leavers from 2010 onwards will remember these trips fondly as the traditional end of season tour which we hope to re-create. We thought after the year we’ve had, we could all do with some nostalgia! Please see the details for all below.

April/May/June – Preseason Nets

We will be hosting some casual nets midweek in Kennington Park south London to allow for some practice and socialising. These will most likely be on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6-8. To allow for flexibility of our schedules and weather, we will organise these through the new Old Blues Cricket WhatsApp group (more on this later).

Sunday 6th June – V Greensox CC, Dulwich Sports Ground – 12pm

Greensox are an informal Civil Service team who we have had the occasional game for in the last few years. The plan is to play a traditional 40 Over game.

Sunday 13th June V West End CC, Esher – 12pm

West End CC are the former cricket club of Matt Weiss, we have had several fixtures with them over the years including some charity matches. The plan is to play a traditional 40 over game

Sunday 27th June V Christ’s Hospital School – 10.30am – Holdsworth Trophy

The pinnacle of the season, no more info needed. Declaration game

Thursday 15th July V Greensox CC, Kings House Sports Ground Barnes – 6pm

We will be playing a midweek T20 Game starting at 6pm.

Friday 30th July – 1st/2nd August, Kings School Bruton Somerset

We have booked accommodation at the School, from Friday 30th July to Sunday 1st August with the option to add on an additional night’s stay which we will assess at a later date to see if it is desirable. The plan is to play an inter club Old Blues 2 day, Test Match style game on the Saturday and Sunday. All fees include pitch rental, 2 nights stay at the school, breakfast and match tees on the Saturday and Sunday.

Suggested Schedule:

-Arrive afternoon / evening of 30th July

-Match Starts 11am Saturday until c.7pm

-Saturday evening BBQ

-Sunday 1st August play to begin at 11am, finish around 4/5pm

-Option to stay for dinner and add 3rd night stay.

Cost – £100 for 2 nights or £120 for 3 nights.

I think you will all agree this is a fantastic deal including accommodation and 2 meals per day, however, if you wish to attend but would like to source your own accommodation, you are welcome to do this also. Of course, friends and family are also welcome to attend, they are welcome to stay with us in the boarding house, but I understand if they would prefer something more comfortable.

Additionally, if you would like to offer a fixture to Old Blues CC through any other groups, we would happily look to engage.

Lastly, as mentioned above we have set up an OBCC WhatsApp group and are looking to shift the main communication of all things relating to Old Blues cricket, to this platform. Alongside this we also have a Facebook page which we will also use for various updates. For those that might not be on any of these platforms the e-mail address will still be live and monitored.
