We are delighted to welcome Matthew Judd as the new Head & CEO of Christ’s Hospital. An experienced school leader, Matthew was Head of Leighton Park School from 2018 and previously held senior leadership posts at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School and Mander Portman Woodward. He brings vision and passion to transformational education and deep commitment to our mission. We sat down with Matthew to hear more about his vision and leadership journey.

From Crawley to Christ’s Hospital
I never imagined that a boy from Crawley would return as Head of Christ’s Hospital. I was educated at a comprehensive school in Crawley, where geography became my passion, thanks to an inspiring set of teachers, including Head of Geography, Roger Nash (PrepA, PeA 56-65).
In a twist of fate, when my appointment here was announced, Roger Nash wrote to me after 30 years, telling me that he and his sons are Old Blues. That unexpected connection was extraordinary to discover. My first connection with Christ’s Hospital goes back more than 30 years, when I came here on work experience. On my last day, the then Headmaster said, ‘If ever you see a job at CH, apply.’ Decades later I finally did.
Growing up, Christ’s Hospital seemed a remarkable place, but distant. But that’s what’s changing. Now, by offering a limited number of day bursaries to talented students with genuine need, we can strengthen our local impact in Sussex.

Joining the Christ’s Hospital community
I’ve been looking forward to this moment for a long time, and I’m genuinely excited to get to know the community and help to move the school forward in a modern, progressive way, enabling it to be the very best it can be.
I told the governing body that it is my life’s ambition to lead Christ’s Hospital, because I believe in transformative education, as that’s the journey I had. My education transformed me, and I fundamentally believe in that. CH is the most socially motivated and driven educational institution in the country. Its mission isn’t just inspiring; it’s lived out every day. I love leading staff and students, and care deeply about creating an environment where people feel proud of where they work, confident in how they work, and inspired by the standards we set together.
Our mission and my commitment
Since 1552, Christ’s Hospital has delivered transformational education — taking young people from all backgrounds and equipping them with the confidence, skills and values to thrive.
My role is about putting that mission first. While it is important to honour the traditions that make CH special, we must keep CH relevant to the modern needs of the UK — balancing heritage and progress. The introduction of fee-assisted day places is a step towards that. We cannot be an island in Sussex. CH must have a meaningful presence in the lives of local families who would truly benefit from its mission.
I believe deeply in our mission and values and that Christ’s Hospital can and should not only be one of the very best in the country but also be recognised as such.
My priorities for the year ahead
1. Listening and understanding First and foremost — listening. My first task is to listen to students, staff, Old Blues, parents and friends. Everyone is a stakeholder in CH’s future.
2. Building connections with the CH community — Old Blues have already written to welcome me with advice and encouragement, which has been heartening. That spirit of connection is something I want to foster across the whole CH community.
3. Securing financial sustainability — With current pressures and a budget deficit, we must balance the books for long-term success. I don’t have every answer on day one, but together we can make smart, brave decisions. Your insights, your deep knowledge of CH and your energy will be vital.
What makes a school great
My job is to ensure that every student has an outstanding and enriching experience at CH.
Our traditions — marching in the Quad, singing in Chapel, remind students that they belong to something much larger, with history and purpose. Education here develops the whole person — academic ambition, alongside character, creativity, service, and sense of community. I joined CH because I deeply believe in what it stands for. I see education as a force for good — something that transforms lives. That motivates me every day. Our students come from diverse and in some cases challenging backgrounds. So, a strong system of support is vital. CH broadens their horizons, offering an inspiring curriculum, alongside drama, sport, music and the full richness of school life, where students can thrive.
My message to Old Blues
I believe, in my heart, that this is one of the great schools of the world. I want those high standards to be welcomed in everything we do — and for everyone to feel proud to be part of it. Together we can give as many young people as possible a transformative Christ’s Hospital experience.
Old Blues have always been proud to belong to this community. Many notice that the school has changed since their time and it is heartening when you return and see CH thriving. You are integral to our community and should be cherished. Your visits, reflections and support mean a great deal.
Yes, change will come, but we will approach it with thoughtfulness, kindness, and inclusivity. Your contributions and the opportunities you provide for students inspire us and are always welcomed.

Looking ahead
We are ambitious for the future. We cherish our history — few schools can match our pageantry, traditions or pride in our uniform, but we are not a museum. We are asking big questions: what does it mean to be Christ’s Hospital in the 21st century? How do we prepare young people for a rapidly changing world? How do we ensure that every student leaves ready, not only for personal success but to be a force for good?
That is the journey we are on together.
