An Evening Organ Recital in Dining Hall

Tuesday 15 May 2018

On 11 May, a large audience gathered in our beautiful Dining Hall to hear the 1878 Henry ‘Father’ Willis organ in action. Peter Dutton (School Organist) and Alex Hodgkinson (Director of Music) played a varied programme including Bach, Gibbons, Elgar, Vierne, and Mendelssohn. The programme was carefully selected so as to best display the attractive colours of the instrument.

The organ came from Christ’s Hospital in Hertford, where it began life in the Chapel and moved to the School Hall. The programme included a charming piece by James Gregory, for many years a teacher at Hertford. It is not beyond question that he might have composed his piece at this very organ in the early years of the 20th century.

The audience was very appreciative, and we hope this wonderful instrument will be heard again soon.
