No sooner had term begun, than the Debating Society held their first debate, on Friday 6 September.
The motion was ‘Social media has made traditional media obsolete.’ Mr Hatton and Grecian (Year 13) pupil Lottie put forward the case for Social Media, arguing that Twitter, Facebook and YouTube allow for the democratization of information and news, making it more accessible to everyone outside of the elitist bubble of traditional journalism.
The opposition, consisting of Deputy Grecian (Year 12) pupil Andrew and Mr Keet, argued that traditional journalism is still very much going strong, with the New York Times having recently exposed the Harvey Weinstein scandal, for example. In the end, the opposition won; it will be interesting to see if the same argument can be won a few years down the line!
