We are delighted to announce two commendations in this year’s Stephen Spender Prize, the national poetry translation competition which attracts a substantial number of entries from across the country.

Ru (GR/Year 13), winner of our internal Poetry in Translation award in the summer, received a special commendation for an entirely original illustrated translation of a poem by the Russian writer Andrei Voznesensky. The judges praised Ru’s work for its nuanced language and striking visual impact.

Alongside Ru, Mr Walsh (English Department) was commended in the Teacher Laureate category. Students at Christ’s Hospital benefit greatly from Mr Walsh’s expertise as a published poet and translator; one of his recent translations appeared in Modern Poetry in Translation, and his new poetry collection, High Ball to the Wee Man, has just been published.

Christ’s Hospital warmly congratulates both Ru and Mr Walsh on their achievements.
