For nearly five centuries, Christ’s Hospital has pioneered social mobility and challenged social inequality to provide an unrivalled start in life for disadvantaged children. As economic and social inequality continue to grow in the UK, Christ’s Hospital’s mission is as relevant today as it was in 1552.  The school is unique. We are strikingly unlike any other independent school in the UK, with a richly diverse pupil body, both in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic background.  More than 75% of our pupils are on some form of financial support, with a considerable number receiving full bursaries.

We are currently conducting a search for a well-qualified and enthusiastic Head of Chemistry from September 2024 or January 2025. This is an exciting prospect for the right person to be part of a unique educational environment. The post offers the opportunity to teach Chemistry to IGCSE and A Level and lead a successful department.  As an independent school, a PGCE is not necessary for teaching at Christ’s Hospital, and we would consider graduates who are interested in the profession or highly qualified professionals who are interested in a career change.

The successful candidate must be able to work well within a team and ideally have previous experience of managing or leading others.  They will be required to teach Chemistry to A level.  The ability to teach other subjects and to be passionate about the role that new technologies and data can play in supporting learning would be an advantage.

Applicants should evidence in the personal statement how they meet the requirements of the role and person specification. Salary is commensurate with experience and paid in accordance with the Christs’ Hospital Teachers’ Salary scale up to £46,324 per annum as well as an allowance for being a Head of Chemistry of £9,808 on a rising scale.  Full participation in the broader life of this busy boarding community is essential and accommodation on site may be provided.
