Working at Christ’s Hospital

Museum and Verrio Tour Volunteer

We are looking to recruit several more volunteers to assist with our extensive historic collection in the museum and our popular Verrio Tours (named after the famous painting in CH Dining Hall).

Christ’s Hospital has had a museum on its site at Horsham since 1994 but its history goes back almost 475 years to its foundation by Edward VI in the City of London in 1552.  Over the centuries, CH has developed extensive collections of over 100,000 artefacts which relate to the school’s history including paintings, manuscripts, costumes, statues, ceramics and ephemera with a CH connection.

We are looking to recruit several more volunteers to assist with our extensive historic collection in the museum and our popular Verrio Tours (named after the famous painting in CH Dining Hall). Successful candidates should have an appreciation and understanding of historic collections and how they are managed, to join our small team of Museum staff and existing volunteers. These potentially separate or blended roles involve strong customer care and organisational skills for supporting the student-guide led Verrio Tours (please note, volunteers are not required to lead the tours). If museum work is preferred or in addition to Verrio Tour support, then an interest in collection care, handling and documentation is relevant.

Whether you think your skills and interests lie more in assisting our Verrio Tours and/or museum work, we are looking for friendly and practical people with a methodical, organised approach. Strong communication skills are important, attention to detail if data entry is required and the ability to follow recognised museum standards and procedures. Ideally you will have  relevant qualifications (but this is not obligatory) or equivalent related subject interests; and/or have some experience of working in a public-facing and/or administrative capacity and have some experience or awareness of basic heritage collection care standards including documentation, handling and storage with a view to cataloguing work, access and interpretation for museum users.

This is a flexible role and can be for less or more than one day a week to cover a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or a Thursday to be mutually agreed. For Verrio Tour volunteering specifically, the working day is a Saturday 9.30am – 2.00pm in term time only and no more than 10 tour dates in a school year.

Lunch is provided and travel expenses to and from CH can be claimed.

To apply please download an application form under Downloads, we do require a completed applcation form please, and cannot accept c.v’s alone. Please send the completed form to Recruitment@christs-hospital.org.uk.
