On 17 May, a team of four UF (Year 10) pupils won the Royal Society of Chemistry Downland Local Section Final of the 2022-23 Chemistry Challenge at the University of Kingston.
Having achieved over 75% in the round 1 exam, Elden, Mimi, Alice and Kiyan travelled to Surrey to compete against five other high-scoring teams from across Surrey and Sussex.
The day saw the pupils being put through their paces with three chemistry challenges: determining what metals coins were made from, answering multiple choice questions, and identifying the per cent impurity of a solution by titration. The CH pupils complemented each other well during the tasks, with the judges all commenting on how well they worked together. Following the challenges, pupils also enjoyed a tour of the University of Kingston labs, learning about Mass and NMR Spectrometers along the way.
The team were very grateful to the event organisers, the RSC Downland Committee, and to the university for hosting; we very much look forward to competing in future years.
