Christ’s Hospital band

A Unique and Uplifting Tradition

There’s nothing quite like the sound of the Christ’s Hospital Band.

Four times a week, over 100 young musicians gather with piccolos, tubas, drums and more to lead the entire school – all 900 students – in a spirited march through the historic Quad and into lunch. This rousing tradition, full of energy, is a treasured part of daily life and a truly unforgettable experience for students and visitors alike.

The Band’s roots go back to 1868, when a small group of students asked for instruments to accompany their drills. From these modest beginnings, it has grown into one of the most iconic and accomplished school bands in the country. The Band is now a symbol of everything Christ’s Hospital stands for: tradition, excellence and community.

Directed by Tim Carter, formerly of the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines, the Christ’s Hospital Band offers an exceptional musical education. Under his expert leadership, students are nurtured, challenged and inspired – gaining valuable skills in performance, discipline, confidence and teamwork.

Performing both in school and at prestigious events, the Band enjoys a high-profile calendar. Highlights include leading the school’s annual parade through the City of London on St Matthew’s Day, performances at Lord’s Cricket Ground and Twickenham Stadium and a starring role in the Lord Mayor’s Show. Each year ends with a stirring farewell display, honouring leavers with an hour-long performance of intricate marching and music.

For students, being part of the Band is a source of immense pride. For parents, it’s a clear reflection of the vibrant, all-round education that Christ’s Hospital provides. More than just music – it’s an experience that shapes character, builds lifelong memories and forms a lasting connection to a school like no other.

History of the band

The history of the band and how it came to be formed. It was in 1728 that Daniel Defoe, author of Robinson Crusoe, suggested to the Governors of Christ’s Hospital in London that thirty boys at the school should be encouraged to take up music in order to provide a pool of talent for national choirs, bands and orchestras.
