Theatre

Award-winning. Versatile. Inspiring.

Christ’s Hospital is proud to be home to an outstanding, purpose-built theatre that plays a central role in school life and the wider cultural community. Designed by renowned architect Bill Howell — best known for his work on the Young Vic — the theatre was completed in 1975 and remains a remarkable example of imaginative, flexible performance space design.

Built to accommodate a wide range of staging and seating formats, the theatre can be configured in multiple ways: as a traditional ‘end-on’ stage, a dynamic ‘thrust’ layout, or as an immersive ‘theatre in the round’— as originally envisioned. This adaptability means that every production brings a fresh perspective and atmosphere, with the venue able to seat up to 500 audience members.

A Space That Evolves

In 2020, the theatre underwent a major enhancement project, designed to improve both the audience experience and the creative opportunities for our students. These improvements included a redesigned and welcoming foyer, updated auditorium décor and technical upgrades — all of which ensure the theatre remains a first-class performance venue.

A Hub for Creativity and Culture

The Christ’s Hospital Theatre is not only the home of the school’s Drama Department and student productions, but also a thriving cultural venue that welcomes a diverse programme of public events throughout the year. These include:

  • Classical and contemporary plays

  • Ballet and modern dance

  • Children’s theatre

  • Comedy and live music

  • Opera and vocal performance

  • Talks and guest speakers

Each term, we publish a seasonal programme of events and welcome both the school community and the general public. With over 600 regular patrons on our mailing list, we are constantly working to expand our reach and introduce new audiences to the magic of live performance at Christ’s Hospital.

Experience the Theatre

We invite you to explore our theatre in person — or take a Virtual Tour of Theatre — to discover this exceptional space for yourself.

Tickets for public performances are available online and booking early is recommended. Parking is free for all theatre visitors.

Whether you’re attending a student-led production or a professional performance, a visit to the Christ’s Hospital Theatre promises an unforgettable cultural experience.
