Medical Centre
Medical Centre
The Medical Centre is open 24 hours a day during term time. There is always a trained nurse on duty to care for students who are unwell and to offer help and advice to students, parents and staff should they have any medical concerns.
The team of qualified nurses and care assistants have a wealth of clinical experience and qualifications. We aim to provide a high level of clinical support and to be a caring, friendly and safe space for students. We work closely with the psychotherapy and counselling team, Sports Injury Therapist and school NHS doctors, all of whom are based in the Medical Centre. The Medical Centre also offers placements to student nurses from nearby Universities.
All boarders are registered with the school doctors, one of whom visits the Medical Centre Monday to Friday mornings. Students can book appointments through the nursing staff or after discussion with their House Matron. We welcome a parent or guardian to attend the appointment either in person or by telephone link. Younger students will always be chaperoned by a member of Medical Centre staff if a parent or guardian is unable to attend.
The Medical Centre has two dormitory style wards and two single en-suite rooms. Students who are unwell while at school are referred for assessment and can be admitted for observation and care. If the student is unable to return to lessons within 48 hours we liaise with parents or guardians to make arrangements for the young person to go home.
We hold daily nurse-led surgeries for minor ailments and concerns, as well as specialist clinics for initial health assessments, routine immunisation catch up, nutrition and diet support, travel health, asthma care and sexual health advice. Another important part of our role is to promote a healthy lifestyle and provide health education within the school community.
We are supported by administrative staff, a housekeeper and drivers who take the young people to outside health appointments when parents are unable to do so, including orthodontic, minor injuries and hospital. The drivers will also act as a chaperone when necessary, reporting back information to the nurses and parents. Some follow- up outpatient appointments are carried out by remote video link.
Should the need for admission to hospital arise the student will be accompanied by their Houseparent or a designated member of staff and parents will be notified. Whilst the Houseparent is able to give consent for emergency treatment, we do ask parents to attend the hospital wherever possible to be with their child.
