Henner Petin (a student at CH from 2012 to 2014) returned to speak to senior classics students on the topic of ‘War and Battle in Literature and History’. After studying Latin at Christ’s Hospital, Henner went on to read classics at the University of Oxford and complete an MPhil at King’s College Cambridge. Henner is now a final year doctoral student at Corpus Christi Oxford. His research focuses on the tragedies of ancient Greek playwright, Euripides. Henner’s talk focused on the GCSE Latin prose author Caesar, investigating how Caesar and other authors including Thucydides and Virgil were influenced by the presentation of war and battle in Homer’s Iliad. His fascinating insights enabled students to create links between a multitude of ancient authors and genres, broadening their understanding of ancient literature.
