School Concert

On Sunday 26 November, 194 students across the whole range of age and musical experience took to the stage in this term’s School Concert.

The Symphony Orchestra opened the show with the first movement of Dvorak’s Symphony no.9 ‘From the New World’, a demanding work which showed off some blistering wind and brass moments. The Chamber Orchestra followed with Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis, consistently a favourite in the Classic FM ‘Hall of Fame’, and we could surely hear why.

Also performing throughout the afternoon were the Intermediate Orchestra and the Training Band, both of whom showed the immense amount of promise amongst our younger years, and reassuring one and all that music at CH is safe for the years to come.

Two contrasting vocal groups demonstrated the sheer versatility of our students, with the Schola Cantorum performing a selection of contemporary choral music which included Esenvalds’ Stars, and the Gospel Choir performing Weak by the Sunday Service Choir.

Our magnificent Band closed the show with a set which included Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance no.4 and a typically virtuosic display from the Corps of Drums. As is now traditional, the Band’s “surprise” encore was the unofficial school anthem, Sussex by the Sea.

Bravo all!
