The annual CH Law Debate took place on 15 March; two teams debated the motion: ‘This House would force all criminals to attend their sentencing hearing’.
This follows the recent case involving Lucy Letby, a former nurse who was convicted of seven counts of murder but did not turn up to hear her sentence. Her absence sparked a renewed debate nationally on how convicts should be treated and resulted in a change in the law.
Joining us for the debate were three experienced lawyers, including two Old Blues, who kindly gave up their Friday evening to adjudicate the debate and take part in a careers Q&A. Special thanks to those in the Debating Society who took part in the event, and congratulations to the winners (Team Opposition) who put forward an excellent and clearly presented case for their side. Well done to Daniel (DG/Year 12) in particular who gained recognition as the best speaker of the evening.
CH has a large Debating Society for all year groups and participates in a number of national competitions each year.
