Gift of Shares or Property

Shares

You can claim tax relief equal to the market value of the shares on the day you make the gift, together with any associated costs such as brokers’ fees. The relief is against your income tax for the year. For example if you give Christ’s Hospital £1,000 worth of shares, and you are a higher rate taxpayer, you will pay £400 less in income tax that year.

Additionally, you will not have to pay any Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on any increase in the value of the shares since you bought them. This could mean a further saving. If shares you donate have gone down in value, you should be aware that you will not be able to use this loss to offset any other CGT liability you have.

However, as Christ’s Hospital is unable to give you financial advice we would urge you to talk to your financial advisor about the tax implications of donating shares.

Further guidance notes relating to the donation of shares are available from the Development Office:

Property

You can donate property to Christ's Hospital School, such as land, buildings, or other objects.

Tax relief can be claimed through donations of property when no interest in the property is retained. This can be through:

  • Income tax relief on the value of the donated property.

  • Exemption from capital gains tax on the increase in value of the donated property since first acquired, and reduced capital gains tax when property is sold at less than market value.

  • Exemption from inheritance tax.

Christ’s Hospital is unable to give you financial advice and we would urge you to talk to your financial advisor about the tax implications of donating property.

Second Blue Fund Target Acheived - Thank You!

We have now reached our overall Blue Fund target of £190,000 to fund another child at CH! Your incredible support along with over 300 Old Blues, parents, staff and friends, has made this possible, demonstrating that joining forces and giving little and often can make a HUGE impact.

The £190,000 will provide a full 7 year bursary at Christ’s Hospital for another child in financial or other need. This child will be the second Blue Fund Pupil to benefit from the collective support of the whole CH community and will start at CH in September 2018

We will of course continue our fundraising to kick start a third Blue Fund which will offer a life-changing opportunity to another child in need. Our new fundraising target is set at £210,000 which, by joining forces, is achievable.

To find out more information or to make a gift to the Blue Fund, please visit the Blue Fund website at: bluefund.christs-hospital.org.uk or contact the Development Office on +44 (0)1403 247519.
